Box Score
Milwaukee, Wis.- Henry Aaron Field once again served as the setting for an offensive affair as the UIC baseball team jumped out to a nine-run lead and held on for a 14-11 victory over UW-Milwaukee on Tuesday afternoon.
After averaging just under 12 runs a game in their last five trips to UWM's home field, the Flames (17-13, 9-3 Horizon League) scored early and often against Panther pitching.
UIC scored nine times in the first three innings and would eventually go up 12-3 after five and a half innings.
The scoring outburst by the Flames was highlighted by two-run homers off the bats of David Cales and Chris Rutta and a five-run third inning that featured only one UIC hit, a two-run double from Micky Pingree.
UW-Milwaukee (7-21, 6-7 Horizon League) would make things interesting in the bottom of the sixth. The Panthers scored seven times, riding the homer-friendly winds with two multi-run blasts, to cut the deficit to 12-10.
In the top of the seventh the Flames capitalized on a costly UWM miscue. After Jake Carr singled with two out, Tyler Moore popped up on the right side of the infield. Panther second baseman Jesse Hart was called off by first baseman Shawn Wozniak, who collided into Hart, dropped the ball and gave Carr enough time to score all the way from first.
Cales moved from third base to the mound in the bottom of the seventh. After giving up a solo shot to Rob Brockel on his first offering of the game, Cales settled down to retire nine of the final 10 Milwaukee batters and earn his eighth save of the year.
Brad Riegler tossed 3.1 innings of relief to earn his first collegiate victory.
Chad Schroeder scored four times, while Cales finished his day at the plate 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Pingree and Rutta, who notched his first career home run in the game, each drove in three runs apiece.
UIC finished its regular-season series against the Panthers with a 4-2 advantage, including a 3-0 sweep of the road portion of its set against UWM.
In three games at Henry Aaron Field this year, the Flames scored a total of 34 runs.
