FAIRBORN, Ohio - The UIC women's volleyball team began a brief two-game road trip on Friday night with convincing win over Horizon League rival Wright State at the C.J. McClin Gymnasium, 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-18).
The Flames (8-7, 3-2 Horizon League) came looking to build upon a strong finish to last weekend's homestand and they did just that by dispensing of the Raiders (6-10, 1-3 Horizon League) in three sets. UIC controlled much of the match with lead changing hands only four times: twice in the first set and once each in the final two frames.
UIC produced solid numbers both offensively and defensively on Friday by attacking at a clip of .247 (36-13-93) for the match, including a mark of .417 (13-3-24) in the second set. Meanwhile, head coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley's bunch came up with a season-high 11 blocks and held Wright State to an attacking percentage of .102 (33-23-98).
"It was a total team effort," said Schumacher-Cawley after the match. "Everyone contributed tonight and when that happens, we play our best volleyball."
Several Flames excelled in Friday's league matchup. Casie Sullivan and Kelsey Safranek led UIC with nine kills apiece, while Janise Dismuke added seven and Aubrey Sniegowski, six. Senior Jessica Dalke led all players in the match with 28 assists.
Defensively, Taylor Szatkowski led the Flames with eight digs, Epiphany Davis had two solo blocks and five total to lead all players on Friday.
"We played much better defense tonight," said Schumacher-Cawley. "Our blocking and digging was as good as its been this year, but it needs to continue to get better every time out on the court."
UIC will wrap up the brief trip on Saturday when they play the Butler Bulldogs in Indianapolis. The Bulldogs are currently unscathed in Horizon League play, winning their last four contests and six of their last seven.
"We're going to have our hands full once again tomorrow," said Schumacher-Cawley. "I expect us to come prepared and ready for a fight."
Saturday's match will begin at 3 p.m. CT and can be seen live on the Horizon League Network.
