MILWAUKEE - The UIC volleyball team began a regular-season-ending four match road trip on Tuesday night with a non-conference loss at the hands of the Marquette Golden Eagles, 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-18).
The Flames (12-15, 7-7 Horizon League) never got into a rhythm on Tuesday night as they became the 11th straight team to fall to Marquette (18-7, 8-2 BIG EAST).
UIC fell behind 13-4 in the opening game, but refused to give in and clawed back by going on a 10-3 run that was capped by a kill from Janise Dismuke to make it 16-14. However, that was as close as the Flames would come in the first before falling, 25-20.
The visitors got off to a quick start in the second following back-to-back kills by Dismuke. Marquette came right back to tie things at five. UIC scored back-to-back points to take a brief two-point lead, but the Golden Eagles answered yet again and cruised to 25-15 victory in the second.
The third set featured seven tie scores, but just two lead changes. After the Flames took a 10-9 lead following a kill by Kelsey Safranek who led UIC with 11 in the match, Marquette answered to tie the match and take a lead they would not surrender.
"Marquette is a great team and they were a big challenge for us," said UIC head coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley. "They are one of the top teams in the BIG EAST right now and we just have to learn from these non-conference matches and use them to help prepare for the stretch run in the Horizon League."
Safranek registered her third straight double-double by adding a team-high 13 digs to go with her 11 kills. It was the sophomore's eighth double-double effort overall this season.
The Flames will be idle for the next six days before continuing the road trip in Macomb, Ill. on Monday, Nov. 8 when they take on Western Illinois at 7 p.m. UIC will wrap up the regular season with a swing through Wisconsin to face Horizon League foes Green Bay and Milwaukee on Nov. 12-13.
