GARY, Ind. - The UIC baseball team fought off possible elimination for the second straight day as they avenged an earlier tournament loss to the Youngstown State Penguins, besting them 4-1.
Jason Ganek had an RBI double and earned his first career save, while Eric Wyman was rock solid and helped the Flames live to play another game at the U.S. Steel Yard in the 2010 Horizon League Championship presented by U.S. Army.
Joe Iacobucci put the Penguins on the scoreboard first with an RBI single to right field in the top half of the third. Padraic Williams scored the run after leading off the frame with a walk. Youngstown State's Tom Clayton, who was on first with an infield single, rounded second base too hard and was erased on a strong throw from UIC's Ty Rubio to Andy Leonard who applied the tag to end the inning.
The Flames answered right back in their half of the third to grab a 2-1 lead. Back-to-back singles by Leonard and Ty Rubio put runners at the corners with one away. Rubio was caught leaning toward second base by Youngstown State starter Blake Aquadro, but was able to keep himself in a rundown long enough to allow Leonard to come in from third.
Steve McGuiggan walked, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch before coming in to score the second UIC run on Ganek's RBI double off the base of the wall in left field. For Ganek, it was his fifth RBI in three Horizon League Championship games.
The Flames loaded the bases and chased Aquadro from the ballgame with two away in the inning, but Penguins reliever Kevin McCulloh fanned Chris Rutta to escape with only a one-run deficit.
In the seventh inning, the Flames added to their lead without recording a hit. Ty Rubio was hit by a pitch and moved to second on McGuiggan's bunt attempt and error by catcher Casey Holland. McGuiggan scored the final run of the game on Rutta's sacrifice fly to right.
Wyman gave the Flames a second stellar start, following Chris Kovacevich's complete game shutout with a six-inning, five-strikeout victory of his own. The junior, who was named the U.S. Army Player of the Game, scattered seven hits and allowed just one run in the third inning.
