CHICAGO - The UIC baseball team scored at least twice in every inning from the second until the sixth and added four more in the eighth on the way to a 22-2 victory over the Trinity International Trojans at Les Miller Field on Tuesday night.
With the wind blowing from the southwest at 20 miles per hour at first pitch, the Flames (17-23) got plenty of offense with home runs off the bats of John Rosinski, Chris Rutta, Ryan Boss, Andy Leonard, Jason Ganek and Joe Betcher to pace the onslaught.
UIC pounded out 18 hits, but was also helped out by six Trinity (29-20) errors during the game. All but one batter who entered the game came around to score at least one run for the Flames.
Ganek scored a game-high four times, while Matt Serna touched the dish on three occasions.
With bases loaded in the fifth inning, Leonard uncorked a towering grand slam over the scoreboard in left centerfield to give the Flames a 14-2 advantage and control of the ballgame.
Chris Kovacevich picked up his second win of the season and his first since March 27th against the Milwaukee Panthers. It was his first appearance since April 3rd at Youngstown State.
The southpaw was sharp and cruised through the first two innings of the ballgame, allowing a hit in each frame, while fanning all but one batter that he faced.
Eric Wyman, Matt Salemi, Brad Riegler and Ganek also each tossed a scoreless frame for Mike Dee's squad. Ganek struck out a pair and Charlie Weinberg set down three batters on strikes in his two innings of work.
UIC will head south this weekend to take on No. 17 Georgia Tech in a three-game set in Atlanta beginning on Friday evening at 6:00 p.m. CT. The two teams will meet on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. and wrap-up the set with a Sunday matinee at 12:00 p.m.
