CHICAGO - The UIC volleyball team (7-11, 1-2 Horizon League) won the third set after falling behind 2-0 but could not overcome 13 blocks by Cleveland State (9-7, 2-1 Horizon League) in a 3-1 (25-21, 25-9, 19-25, 25-19) home loss to the Vikings Friday night. The Flames were limited to 43 kills and a .130 attack percentage.
Junior Stephenee Yancy, who ranks fourth in the nation with 296 kills, put down a match-high 18 kills on 36 attempts for a strong .306 attack percentage. Yancy, who owns double-digit kills in all 18 matches this season, had nine kills on 13 attempts in the third set victory. Yancy also collected four total blocks and has 22 blocks over her last four matches.
Redshirt freshman Nicole Johnson had 38 assists, nine digs and a service ace in an all-around solid performance. Johnson, who leads the nation with 819 assists, has eight aces over her last six contests.
Redshirt senior Maggie Strus compiled a match-high 15 digs for her 11th consecutive double-digit performance. She raised her career total to 1,517 digs and needs 15 more to become UIC's all-time dig leader. Carlyn Fisk (1988-91) is the current record holder with 1,531 digs.
Sophomore Kara Johnson put down 10 kills for her fourth consecutive double-digit effort. Johnson also tied her career-high with three total blocks and compiled seven digs. She had five kills on 10 attempts in the first set.
Senior Sara Jo Sternard had five kills to raise her career total to 925 while sophomore Casey Harris added six kills. Harris and Sternard also contributed two blocks each. Freshman Allie O'Reilly recorded her tenth service ace of the season in the fourth set.
UIC led 15-11 in the first set after McCoy's kill but a 4-0 CSU rally tied the score. Harris' second kill of the set narrowed the CSU lead to 21-20 but the Vikings took advantage of three consecutive UIC errors to win the first set, 25-21.
CSU hit at a .522 clip in the second set while holding UIC to six kills in a 25-9 victory. The third set featured six lead changes and O'Reilly's 6-0 service run broke a 13-13 tie wide open. UIC put down 14 kills and had four blocks in the win.
The fourth set was a tight contest with four lead changes before CSU pulled ahead 19-17 following Christina Toth's kill and Maggie Hannon's block. Kara Johnson's third kill of the set pulled the Flames' within 20-19 but the Vikings sealed the victory with a 5-0 run.
UIC concludes the weekend with a Saturday contest against Youngstown State (10-8, 1-2 Horizon League). First serve is set for 4 pm inside the Flames Athletic Center. The Penguins fell in four sets at Valparaiso Friday night.
