CHICAGO- The UIC men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept the Milwaukee Panthers on Saturday, earning their first Horizon League victories of the season. The men's team won by a score of 134-108, while the women's squad edged out the Panthers, 129-114.
"This was a big win for our team and with this being the third week in a row of competition this really shows how tough we are as a team," said head coach Tim Loeffler. "We are looking to next week as we go up against the defending Horizon League champions Oakland and a great Wright State team."
The men's 400 medley team helped kicked off the day on a positive note with a victory. The team of senior Peter Errichiello, senior Shaun Seuschek, freshman Kevin Garza, and junior Nicholas Kowaleski clocked in with a time of 3:27.55. Kowaleski would add two more individual victories in the 200 free (1:42.51) and 100 free (47.27). Coming back from injury, senior Kei Ishimaru collected a first place finish in the 200 fly (1:51.62) and a second place finish in the 200 IM (1:54.80).
Sophomore Tanner Alms earned a victory in the 1000 free (9:43.78) and touched second in the 500 free, posting a time of 4:44.68. The Flames were also victorious in the 50 free courtesy of freshman Connor Homans (21.79) and the 200 breast as senior Christian Grobe just beat out teammate and fellow senior Brayden Amendola with a time of 2:10.68.
Junior Tyler Pastore captured a win in the one-meter dive posting a score of 287.70 and placed second in the three-meter dive (250.50).
The women's team also began the meet with a win in the 400 medley relay. The team of senior Jocelyn Langballe, sophomore Sophia Shalabi, senior Danel Voorhees, and freshman Daniela Cabrera posted a time of 3:57.24. Langballe would also capture a win in the 200 back (2:05.28).
Sophomore Brianna Hines, for the third week in a row, walked away with multiple victories. On Saturday, Hines was victorious in the 1000 free (10:24.22), 200 free (1:51.44) and 500 free (4:58.45).
Junior Claire Haggerty earned wins in the 200 IM (2:08.00) and 200 breast (2:23.66). Senior Veronica Gibson collected a win in the 200 fly (2:07.05) and a pair of second place finishes in the 1000 free (10:34.01) and 500 free (5:04.25).
On the boards, sophomore Rachel Criscione placed second in the three-meter dive (243.15) and sophomore Katy Knight finished third in the one-meter (218.70).
The Flames will be back in the pool next Saturday (Nov. 14) as they travel to Oakland to square off with the Golden Grizzlies and Wright State.
