UIC Rises to the Occasion Against Oklahoma, Cal

Flames Battle Defending Champs With Season-High Score

For the third straight meet, UIC set a season high.  The team scored 370.300 in a competitive tri-meet at Cal with Oklahoma.  The defending national champion Sooners took first place and the hosts took second.  Nonetheless, the Flames received season best performances up and down the lineup, including five top tallies from Sam Montague.

"What a night - another season high!" head coach Charley Nelson said.  "This team is really learning how to compete  Even with that, we left multiple points out there, so there's a lot of room to keep climbing.  Xan Weaver and Sam Montague had really strong showings in the all-around, which should position them well in the rankings.  Kaleb Booth keeps getting better too.  His floor routine stood up right next to future Olympians who were on the floor tonight.  It was great to see a big UIC crowd in the stands, too."

Rotation 1 – Pommel Horse
  • Colin Schwartz scored 12.700 and finished eighth to lead the Flames.
  • James Strevey (a season high 12.150) and Mike Peluso (12.100) were neck-and-neck with both finishing in the top 10.
  • Sam Montague also set a season high, scoring 11.900.
Rotation 2 – Still Rings
  • Weaver was the team's high scorer on rings with a mark of 12.550.
  • Wes Diveney followed close behind, scoring 12.500.
  • Montague posted another season best with his score of 12.400.
Rotation 3 – Floor
  • Kaleb Booth had a sixth place performance and a season high 13.950, a full quarter point better than his previous top score.
  • Montague's 13.650 was next for the Flames.  He also finished in the top 10.
  • Sam Forbes also cleared his previous season high by a quarter point, scoring 12.950.
Rotation 4 – Parallel Bars
  • Xan Weaver set a team season high with his stellar routine worth 13.050.
  • Montague had his third season high of the meet.  He registered 12.800.
  • Paul Burney, with a 12.250, and Schwartz and Eric Barnd, who each scored 12.200, were tightly bunched in the standings.
  • The Flames set a team season high with a 60.800 total.
Rotation 5 – High Bar
  • It was yet another season high for Montague with his team-high 12.550.
  • Sam Norwood was next for the Flames with his 11.450.
  • James Marden posted an 11.150.
Rotation 6 – Vault
  • Booth paced the team for a second time, scoring 14.150 and taking eighth place.
  • Burney had a 13.700, with Montague and his 13.600 right behind.
  • Weaver and Schwartz each scored 13.150.  For Weaver, it was his best vault of the season.
  • The team closed out the meet with another season high, totaling 67.450.
All-Around
  • Given his plethora of season highs during the meet, it was no surprise that Montague set a new season and career high in the all-around.  His total of 76.900 was third.
  • Weaver returned to the all-around for the first time in four meets.  He came back with a season high 72.000.
Up Next
  • The Flames have just one more meet remaining in the regular season.
  • A dual meet at Michigan awaits UIC next Saturday.  The ECAC Championships will follow on April 6.
