Flames Set Top Times On Day One Of League Championships

BROWN DEER, Wis. - The UIC men's and women's swimming & diving teams produced season-best times and school records in Wednesday's events as they wrapped up competition on day one of the Horizon League Championships. In the standings, the men's squad stands at third place with 125 behind first-place Milwaukee with 152, while the women's squad holds place at fourth with 83, as the Panthers lead with 109.

Competing in the 200 free relay, 1000 free and 200 medley relay, the men and women collected a total of 11 team- and individual-best times on the season.

The men's team began its start in the 200 free relay by placing in a tie for second place with Milwaukee. Gabe Cury, Vince Errichiello, Joel Demuth and Daniel Corley fought until the end, with Corley producing a team best 20.07, to come in at 1:21.28.

Next, in the 1000 free, Zach Van Swol took in a second-place finish with 9:28.05 to lead UIC. Alex Webster (9:43.06), Steven Mell (9:53.75) and Jay Schackle (9:59.98) also competed for the Flames to come in at 12th, 14th and 15th place, respectively.

Rounding out the day in the 200 medley relay, the team of Brian Sivak, Will Ikeda, Cury and Errichiello placed third with a final of 1:31.55. Errichiello finished with a team best 20.34.

After participating in the prelims, Mike Greco and Woody Lord competed in the A Final, while Connor Howard finished out in the B Final. Greco held fifth place with 295.90, Lord scored 283.05 for seventh and Howard came in 10th with 231.25.

The women's team set school records in all three events. Emily Gniatczyk, Monica Pinkus, Kelsey Millin and Marissa Yontz collected third place as they set a school record with 1:33.33 in the 200 free relay. Pinkus put up 23.05 in her length of the race. While placing first, Cleveland State posted a 1:31.18 to mark a championship record.

Melanie Waszak produced a second-place finish and a school record in the 1000 free with 10:06.51. Following up for UIC was Sara Pardue in 15th with 10:40.64 and Lillian Cabel in 22nd with 11:08.80.

In the 200 medley relay sequence, Clair Martin, Pinkus, Waszak and Gniatczyk set a school record and came together to pull away with third place in 1:43.48. Gniatczyk swam a team-best 23.22. Claiming first, Milwaukee also set a championship record with 1:40.64.

Competition resumes Thursday morning at the Schroeder Aquatic Center.
