July 31, 2015 The 2015-16 academic year begins in 24 days and UICFlames.com counts down the Top 25 Flames over the summer months (June 8-July 31). Each sport will be featured over eight weeks as we preview the upcoming year in UIC Athletics. In the final installment of `Top 25 Flames for 2015-16', we will look at women's soccer forward
Jasmin Carrera. The junior earned postseason distinctions in 2014 by placing on the All-Horizon League Second Team and All-Freshman Team in UIC's inaugural season.
Carrera was a force for the Flames as she led the team in goals (4), assists (2) and points (10). She was responsible for scoring the first goal in program history on Aug. 22 against SIUE and went on to score against Morehead State, IUPUI and Eastern Michigan. Her assists on the year came against Saint Louis and Milwaukee.
The Flames' co-captain was one shot shy of matching
Emily Wauer for most attempts taken on the season as she accumulated 26, with 12 reaching on goal for a .462 shots-on-goal percentage. Carrera set season-high shot total twice with four against Iowa and Eastern Michigan, while she added three versus IUPUI.
In December 2014, Carrera was named a nominee for the Mundial Sports Network's Best of the Best Award. The award honors Latino high school and college athletes around the nation who have shown great leadership both on and off the field.
