Chicago, Ill.- The UIC baseball team scored 10 runs in the bottom of the fifth to break open a tie game and defeat Trinity International, 18-5, in the first of two games at Les Miller Field on Saturday.
Brett Schaefer drove in five runs with two swings of his bat, while Brandon Harwell was 3-for-4 with four RBI. Steve McGuiggan also had a swell day, going 4-for-5 with a pair of RBI.
The contest resumed on Saturday morning in the bottom of the first and UIC (23-17) trailing 1-0 after Friday's game between the two teams was halted in the middle of the first due to severe thunderstorms.
The Trojans (17-19) had taken the early lead yesterday when a ball hit by Scott Dawson to lead off the game was juggled by the wind and dropped into left for a triple. An RBI groundout two batters later put the first run on the board.
The Flames scored a run in each of the first two innings on Saturday, going ahead for the first time on Harwell's second-inning solo shot.
The game was even at 3-3 heading to the bottom of the fifth when the UIC offense exploded. Schaefer broke the game open with a grand slam, and Kevin Coddington followed with a home run of his own. Three batters after the back-to-back jacks Harwell homered for the second time in the game as 15 hitters came to the dish for the Flames during the frame.
The Flames tacked on five more runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Derrick Miramontes picked up his fifth win of the year with five innings of work, allowing just one earned run.
